The widest and most well-known Porsche model line, the 911 received a number of updates for the 2018 model year. Besides, the automaker introduced the new impressive models - the 911 GT3 and GT2 RS. The base version of the 2018 Porsche 911 (the Carrera) employs the engine which was redeveloped from the ground up, a 3.0 L twin turbo boxer 6-cylinder capable of 370 hp. It can be mated to a 7-speed manual or 7-speed double-clutch PDK gearbox featuring manual and automatic modes. A top speed of the model is 183 mph and its 0-60 mph time is 4.4 seconds. A wide range of more potent powertrains is offered across the 911 range, with a 3.8 L boxer 6-cylinder engine rated at 580 hp being the most powerful one.
The most striking offering for 2018 is, indisputably, a 700-hp Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The GT2 suffix was once used on the short-lived twin-turbo model available for 2011, which was rated at then-unbelievable 620 hp. The flat-six engine on the revived GT2 RS makes use of advanced tech like bigger turbochargers and extra cooling system to rocket the car to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and provide a 211 mph top speed. To date, it is the most powerful street-legal member of the 911 lineup. To boost performance and better handle that power, the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS features a specially tuned chassis, large air intake and rear wing, ceramic brakes, titanium exhaust, and carbon fiber elements throughout the body.
The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 comes with a 4.0 L twin turbo flat-six good for 500 hp. Transmission options include a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch and a 6-speed sports manual. The latter provides a bit softer 0-60 mph acceleration (3.8 sec versus 3.2 sec by PDK) but allows for reaching 198 mph instead of 197 mph of the automatic. The model comes with a rear-wheel-steering system that can steer the rear wheels with or against front ones, sharpening turns and improving stability at high speeds. Besides, the 911 GT3 has a wing spoiler made from carbon fiber. Inside, there is a small-diameter sporty steering wheel. To reduce the weight, the model comes with only two seats. The standard seats have an electric backrest and allow for height adjustment. There is also the new Touring Package introduced for the manual-equipped 2018 911 GT3, offering some exclusive exterior and interior touches. On the outside, an adjustable flap comes in place of the rear wing, giving the car a more traditional rear end look. A similar feature can be found on the standard Carrera. The only specific interior details are leather surfaces instead of Alcantara and the GT3 Touring badge replacing the regular script.
Also new for this year is a long-awaited no-frills 2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T model. It is the lightest car in the 911 lineup, built specifically for purists who don't need a large amount of options and big horsepower. While being equipped with the same 3.0-liter 370-hp flat-six as the standard model, it has a transmission with a shorter final-drive ratio and shorter gear lever as well as locking mechanical differential in the rear. The T model (T stands for Touring) also got the PASM Sport Suspension that gave it a drop by 0.39 inches.
The 2018 Porsche 911 offers the corporate Active Suspension Management system (PASM) as standard. Depending on road conditions and your driving style, PASM constantly regulates the damping force on each wheel. It has two modes selected by a button on the center console, being Normal that combines performance and comfort and Sport that provides a much firmer setup. Porsche Stability Management is standard as well. Thanks to sensors that permanently monitor lateral acceleration, speed, yaw velocity, and direction, this system maintains stability even when you’re driving at peak performance levels. The base version of the 911 by Porsche comes with 4-piston aluminum monoblock calipers that have a diameter of almost 13 inches. They are light yet tough and provide a rapid response.
