The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is the first model in the automaker’s ID portfolio of electric vehicles to make its way to the United States. In other parts of the world, it is the ID.3 hatchback that opens the brand-new range of EVs. The ID.4 is a compact crossover SUV based on the ID. Crozz concept vehicle. It retains many of the concept’s styling cues but tones down the overall design, ditching the coupe-like profile and curvaceous lines of the Crozz for a more conventional wagon shape. However, the distinctive wraparound LED DRLs are there, as is an aggressively-shaped front bumper that together emphasize the width and make the vehicle less visually massive. The exterior can be further customized with a variety of 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 accessories and parts available on the market.
The ID.4 uses Volkswagen’s MEB chassis (modular electric drive matrix) purpose-built for electric vehicles. This platform places the 77 kWh battery pack under the passenger compartment. This ensures a low center of gravity and balances weight, forming a basis for dynamic handling. The design of the SUV is aerodynamically-optimized reducing the drag coefficient and helping achieve a good driving range. In its RWD form, the SUV makes 201 horsepower, while opting for all-wheel drive brings 295 horsepower alongside more traction.
The RWD Pro can drive up to 260 miles on a single charge, while the RWD Pro S is rated for 250 miles. AWD versions are equipped with two motors, each turning an axle. They are more powerful yet come with the same battery found in their rear-wheel-drive siblings. So it’s no surprise that the AWD Pro and Pro S knock their estimated range down to 249 and 240 miles, respectively. It takes less than 8 hours to replenish the battery on a home power outlet, while a DC fast charger cuts that time drastically, charging the pack to 80 percent in about 40 minutes. The VW ID.4 is designed for the needs of American drivers and will be assembled at the plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
EV packaging also provides for a capacious interior with enough space for both people and cargo. There’s no central tunnel and the floor is flat allowing passengers to travel in greater comfort and store more luggage. Whatever the customization options will be, it is always great to own a vehicle like no other, and that is easy to achieve given the amount of 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 parts and accessories on offer. The German automaker’s battery-electric small SUV sports a high-tech digital cockpit. Many of the physical buttons and switches have been eliminated, giving way to touchscreen and voice controls. The ID.3’s digital gauges, an augmented-reality head-up display, and the ID Light communication system carry over to the ID.4 crossover. The infotainment system is operated via either a 10.0-inch touchscreen or a bigger 12.0-inch unit.
Statement and Gradient equipment packages are available, with the former adding simulated leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power-operated trunk lid, and the latter bringing 20-inch alloy wheels and a two-tone exterior paint scheme, among other niceties. The content of both packs is present in the limited-production 1st Edition model, which also adds white-painted exterior accessories, special badges, and a tow hitch.
