The Chevy Uplander premiered for the 2005 model year. Labeled as a minivan, it was more of a crossover wrapped inside of a minivan's body. Constructed on the GM's U-body GMT201 platform along with the Buick Terraza and the Saturn Relay, the Uplander was offered as a front-engine, front-wheel drive vehicle (four-wheel drive would be available eventually as well). Initially, it was offered with a 3.5L V6 engine capable of approximately 200 horsepower mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, but a year later, a shortened wheelbase Uplander made its way into the lineup, taking along with it a 3.9L V6 available for versions of the model outfitted with front-wheel drive.
Two trim levels rounded out the Chevy Uplander: the LS and the LT (shortened wheelbase versions of the model only came in the LS). Standard equipment and parts for the entry-level LS included power windows and locks, a tilted steering wheel, cruise control, remote entry, and a CD stereo with MP3 compatibility. The LT Uplander showed off even more with a power driver's seat, power-sliding rear passenger rear door, roof rails, a DVD entertainment center, and second-row's captain's chairs. In each model, the third row splits 50/50 to allow for both cargo room and passenger room. For 2007, the 3.5L V6 was no longer offered, nor was all-wheel drive. However, a flex-fuel variant of the 3.9L V6 was introduced in order to take its place.
As for safety, the Chevy Uplander employed such parts as antilock brakes, stability control, front-side airbags (standard on the LT) with second-row side airbags available for the 2LT and 3LT trim levels. Despite some of the Uplander's more endearing qualities, Chevy discontinued the model in the US in 2008. However, production of the Chevy Uplander remained until the 2009 model year, as it was still exported to Mexico and Canada. During its time on the road, the Chevy Uplander picked up praise from around the industry, at one point being called “hands-down the best minivan GM has ever offered” by NewCarTestDrive.com. Despite no longer being assembled, the Uplander remains a presence on North American roadways thanks to a flexible demeanor and reliable GM performance.
This ultra-versatile vehicle combines the sportiness of a crossover with the sensibilities of a minivan, giving it the space and drivability motorists of all walks of life can enjoy. The Chevy Uplander also features a boxy yet smooth exterior shape, giving it a stylish edge over most of its rivals. As an everyday vehicle, this is one minivan that delivers whether it is for a cruise around town or a trip to the country.
