The Jeep Wrangler debuted with a series of inline engines under the hood. The first generation, codenamed the YJ, appeared in dealerships in 1986, and its engine choices included two inline-six power units, a 4.0L AMC 242 and 4.2L AMC 258. The standard engine option was a 2.5L AMC 150 inline-four. The 2nd generation of the Wrangler gained all-new PowerTech engines constructed by Chrysler (2.4 L standard and two bigger optional power units - 2.5L I4 and 4.0L I6. For the third generation, the Wrangler lineup obtained a 2.8L diesel engine and two gasoline V6s featuring swept volume of 3.6 L and 3.8 L.
