As for high-performance and racing machines, it's often sensible to install the bearings having a trimetal construction, which includes steel back, copper-lead intermediate material, and third layer depending on a planned application. Such bearings are not as hard and durable as bimetal ones, but that's the point – they allow the crankshaft and other parts to survive under extreme loads appearing at high RPM or during hard acceleration.

Holes and grooves in engine bearings are made for the most efficient lubrication, but it's recommended to properly select bearing clearances and oil viscosity. Less viscous motor oils can be better for power or fuel economy, but they require tighter clearances.
