Ram 1500 Automatic Transmission Flexplates

A flexplate is a part of an automatic transmission, where it takes place of a flywheel found in a manual transmission. Positioned similarly to the flywheel, the flexplate differs by its design and functions performed. Due to its generally smoother action, a torque converter doesn’t require the presence of a rotational energy accumulator used for softening the driveline reengagement (the main function of the flywheel). Besides, the flexplate is expected to slightly bend while compensating the longitudinal shift of the converter. As a result, the flexplate is thinner and much lighter than the flywheel, and the two are not interchangeable. Both devices, however, feature a toothed rim used by the starter motor to crank the engine.

The flexplate works under the conditions of heavy bending and centrifugal loads slowly deteriorating its structural integrity. The eventual result of this process is a failure of the plate that is fraught with quite serious powertrain damages. That’s the reason why a worn flexplate should be replaced in advance, before it transforms one easy-to-fix problem into a bunch of far more considerable issues.
