Ram Trucks is a division of FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) US LLC. It was established in 2010, in a move that was controversial at the time, by removing the Dodge Ram line of trucks from the Dodge division of FCA, so that marketing for the two divisions could be more carefully focused. In hindsight this reorganization has been highly successful. Dodge has been able to present a youthful image and emphasize performance, with its Challenger and Charger Hellcats and the Viper, while Ram has concentrated on the toughness, technology, and capability that knowledgeable truck buyers are looking for. The split has also enabled Ram to grow its commercial truck sales, and allow it to more easily expand its marketing efforts into heavy-duty trucks. The growth in sales at the two divisions is further proof of the wisdom of the restructuring.

Although a Ram hood ornament was first displayed on a Dodge truck as far back as 1933, it was not until Chrysler Corporation redesigned the Dodge truck line for the 1981 model year that the name Ram was used. Despite bearing the aggressive Ram moniker, there was nothing ground-breaking about this redesign, and the 1981-93 generation of Dodge trucks continued to languish in 3rd place in sales behind their Ford and General Motors competition. The bright spot that did increase sales was the addition of the Cummins diesel engine as an option for the ¾-ton 250 and 1-ton 350 models in 1989. This 5.9L in-line 6-cylinder engine featured a turbocharger and direct injection, and was significantly more advanced than the other domestic truck diesel offerings of the time.

The landmark year that sent Ram Trucks on the path to the sales success that it continues to enjoy today was 1994. A thorough redesign gave Dodge trucks a tough, big-rig look that was a huge hit with pickup truck buyers, and sales more than tripled from the year before. This style carried through to 2001 on 1500 models and 2002 on 2500 and 3500 models. Also in 1994, a massive 8L V-10 engine became optional on 2500 and larger models. The redesign of the 1500 for 2002 and the 2500 and above trucks for 2003 was a major update to styling, chassis and interior that was necessary to keep pace with Ford and GM. A significant change during this generation was the switch from suicide doors to conventional rear-opening doors on the Quad Cab. A move that further cemented the uniqueness of Ram trucks was the reintroduction of the legendary “Hemi” engine in 2003. This generation also saw the beginnings of Ram commercial trucks with the introduction of a 3500 Cab and Chassis model in 2007, followed by a 4500 and 5500 in 2008.

The current Ram pickup truck platform originated in 2009, but is still very much a contemporary and competitive design. The lineup includes 2WD and 4WD ½-ton 1500, ¾-ton 2500, and 1-ton 3500 as well as 3500, 4500, and 5500 Cab and Chassis models. Available body styles for 1500 through 3500 models include the Regular Cab with choice of 6’4” or 8’ bed, Quad Cab with 6’4” bed, and Crew Cab with 5’7” or 6’4” bed. Cab and Chassis trucks come in Regular and Crew Cab in a range of wheelbases. Ram 1500 comes with a standard 3.6L V6 engine, and optional 5.7L Hemi V8 or 3L V6 diesel engine. The 5.7L Hemi is standard on Ram 2500 and 3500, with optional 6.4L Hemi V8 or 6.7L in-line 6-cylinder Cummins diesel. The 6.4L Hemi is standard on Cab and Chassis trucks with the 6.7L Cummins diesel optional. Both 6 and 8-speed automatic transmissions are offered, and a 6-speed manual is available on ¾-ton and larger trucks.

Ram pickups are available in an extensive range of trim levels including the economical Express, stylish SLT, upgraded Big Horn, well-equipped Sport, luxurious Laramie, and top of the line Limited. Or if you’re looking for a rugged truck that’s off-road ready there’s the Rebel and the Outdoorsman, both featuring standard all-terrain tires, fender flares, heavy-duty shocks, and tow hooks, among other standard and optional equipment. In addition to their unique appearance and select powertrain options, Ram pickups have other features not available with the competition, including smooth-riding coil spring rear suspension on 1500 and 2500 models, and optional and exclusive RamBox Cargo Management System that provides storage area inside the rear fenders. For towing, Ram offers class exclusive 4-wheel air suspension, with automatic load-leveling and 5 driver-adjustable ride height settings, Trailer Sway Control, which automatically applies the brakes and/or reduces engine speed to eliminate trailer sway, and Hill Start Assist, to prevent rolling backward on an incline.

Ram Trucks’ expanding commercial presence starts with the Ram Tradesman pickup, available in 1500, 2500, 3500, and Cab and Chassis models, with cab and bed sizes, powertrain choices, and optional features that are right for every business. The Ram Cargo Van, the commercial version of the popular Dodge minivan, was discontinued in 2015 and succeeded by the FWD Ram ProMaster City, with standard 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and 9-speed automatic transmission. With best-in-class maximum payload, and unsurpassed towing capacity, the ProMaster City can be configured for cargo or up to 5 passengers and cargo. With cargo capacity that far exceeds the competition, the ProMaster Cargo Van features the only FWD platform in its class, for the most responsive handling and maximum operating economy. It’s available in a wide range of sizes, from the low roof 118” wheelbase 1500 to the high roof 159” wheelbase 3500, and it can also be configured as a Chassis Cab, Cutaway, or Window Van. A 3.6L V6 gasoline engine is standard, a 3L in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine is optional, and both come with 6-speed automatic transmission.
