Rivian had a long way to go to become a renowned automaker. The company that was soon to be named Rivian Automotive was founded in 2009 by Robert RJ Scaringe, an enthusiastic mechanical engineer who was initially engaged in creating an affordable and fuel-efficient sports car. The prototype didn't make it to production; in 2011, the focus shifted to electric vehicles, and the company stepped into the shadows and began working at attracting investors and establishing the infrastructure for the forthcoming production. In 2013, Rivian relocated its headquarters from Florida to Livonia, Michigan, bringing it closer to suppliers and Detroit-based automotive companies. In 2017, the company bought a manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois that was formerly owned by Mitsubishi.

The Rivian R1T electric pickup was revealed in 2018 and soon entered production. Deliveries began in October 2021, making Rivian the first automaker to bring an all-electric truck to U.S. roads. The R1T, just like its SUV sibling, has a quad-motor setup that can apply torque to each wheel automatically to make the vehicle super-agile on the road and off. The motors can launch the truck and SUV to 60 mph in only 3 seconds or less. With up to 14.5 inches of ground clearance, the vehicles are ready for off-road adventures. The unique feature of the R1T is its Gear Tunnel storage compartment that houses power outlets and can hold 11 cubic feet of cargo or the company's modular accessories, such as the Camp Kitchen.
